What is worth learning?

Image
Everything is worth learning. Everything that is thrown at you as a teacher or as an adult or child is worth learning and picking yourself up to not or do something different. As a teacher it’s our role to make our students feel safe, comfortable, included, and represented in our classroom. I think this is very important as a teacher because at the end of the day creating this setting is showing your students you value their time and space. I don’t believe all sides are being heard or taught in our education system. I believe that the laws and stuff being placed in the classroom isn’t allowing students to fully be successful. As a teacher it’s concerning to me because we can only go so far. My biggest fear as a future educator is not teaching or pushing hard enough for students to learn the harsh reality of history. If we continue to sugar coat this subject or ignore it, we as a society are creating a negative impact. From this module the thing that stood out was learning even by...

It’s 2023, why are schools still segregated?

Image
That’s an interesting question to start out my blog: why are schools still segregated? I think we as a society struggle especially when past generations pass down the same beliefs. It’s no longer a “tradition” when white people say “my family believes in” when it comes to people of color. Spreading hate is what our society does. Hate just from the color of your skin tone. From this week’s module hate started way long ago. The laws the government made just to make a person of color suffer is unbelievable. People have put a label on people of color. The labels being “aggressive” and “poor”. These labels that many teachers put on students, especially students of color. I believe schools are still segregated because people in higher places are still set in their old traditional beliefs. They don’t try to change the way they feel. Our government doesn’t try to achieve change when it comes to being more segregated. The government failed people of color and the education system. We are still ...

What lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child?

Image
As a future teacher, what made me want to do this career was being able to see students achieve their goals, new reading levels, learning to spell, everything that comes with teaching. The feeling you get when a student is excited that they got a new reading level or the eagerness to learn new things is rewarding to not only you but your student. I’m willing to go to the lengths for any student when I become a teacher. While reading throughout this whole module, I learned words and ways to go about topics. One thing that stood out to me was “authentic caring”. It stated it’s important to have that with students and I think this is something very important to have as a teacher. The lengths that I would go to for my students will always show empathy towards them. I think it’s important to allow a student to express their emotions and be a support system for them. Then another word that I learned was “culturally responsive” . This is a great example of going to the lengths for your ...

How does gender affect the teaching profession?

Image
Gender is huge, especially in the teaching profession. One thing that sticks out I think for everyone in the world is we only have female teachers and very few male teachers. One thing I’ve noticed is we view male teachers differently, they have more rules set in place. They can’t be loving, they can’t be giving out hugs. It’s a completely different setting compared to a female teacher. I’ve had one male teacher in high school. The subject he taught was chemistry but he was very standoffish. Never crossed any boundaries. We view female teachers as caring and loving like a mother figure but when a male teacher does it, it’s completely wrong and inappropriate. I think this is unfair because why can’t male teachers make a difference by providing the same but as a father figure? Why take that away. Why is it deemed inappropriate? I think having more male teachers in schools would be a great way of showing change within society. After reading this weeks articles it talked about how Trans Yo...

Do I have the full picture?

Image
Do I have the full picture? No, in school I never got the full picture until I entered college. In elementary, middle, and high school they do not teach us the full picture. After reading the article about Autumn, a 17 year old senior getting placed into an alternative school for students with severe disciplinary problems after she finally decided to stand up for herself because her own school failed her. The principal, school district, and teacher failed Autumn leading up to this outburst. She had gone into the office filing a complaint about a student that was harassing her and that she was struggling in school because of it. As a future teacher, I will not tolerate any of that in my classroom especially if I see a student struggling from it. I want to represent my students and myself by protecting them. It’s sad to see that the school failed Autumn. Autumn was a bright young girl with a big future ahead of herself.  By doing so, as a teacher I have to touch base on topics that w...

How do we talk about issues that matter?

I believe as a future teacher it’s hard to talk about certain topics on issues that matter. Not everyone is ready to speak on real-world issues. Real-world issues are important to me but there’s only so much I can say to my students. Everyone has very different viewpoints. We have to practice “treat others the way you want to be treated” in order to respect other people’s opinions on different matters. As a teacher you have to let your students know it’s a safe place to talk about day to day issues. In the reading “Teaching While Queer: One Teacher on Being Out in the Classroom '' by Kaitlin Smith, she states “The most important thing is that we respect that everybody's situation is different. As Facing History's slogan says, "people make choices and choices make history"...and some choices people have made in history have had really bad consequences, but we also can't judge the choices that people make to protect themselves.”. She makes this statement aft...

Why Teach?

Image
Hello, my name is Teresa. I am currently a junior majoring in early elementary education. I have always loved being around children. I love how innocent and caring they are. It brings joy to me. I used to babysit while in high school for my parents' friends. I was motivated by my 5th and 11th grade teachers. In elementary I struggled to read and understand certain subjects due to being dyslexic. My 5th grade teacher would stay after school and do tutoring with me to catch me up. She inspired me because she took the time to help me progress in my school work. Then in high school I was very unsure on what I wanted to do with my future. It wasn’t until I was put into my elective called instructional practice. I ended up going to elementary’s and shadowing teachers for a full year. I did it for two years and the teachers I got to shadow really admired me to pursue a career. Being able to learn how to do lesson plans and of course being able to see students achieve new goals was very ex...
