Do I have the full picture?

Do I have the full picture? No, in school I never got the full picture until I entered college. In elementary, middle, and high school they do not teach us the full picture. After reading the article about Autumn, a 17 year old senior getting placed into an alternative school for students with severe disciplinary problems after she finally decided to stand up for herself because her own school failed her. The principal, school district, and teacher failed Autumn leading up to this outburst. She had gone into the office filing a complaint about a student that was harassing her and that she was struggling in school because of it. As a future teacher, I will not tolerate any of that in my classroom especially if I see a student struggling from it. I want to represent my students and myself by protecting them. How do we talk about issues that matter?

I believe as a future teacher it’s hard to talk about certain topics on issues that matter. Not everyone is ready to speak on real-world issues. Real-world issues are important to me but there’s only so much I can say to my students. Everyone has very different viewpoints. We have to practice “treat others the way you want to be treated” in order to respect other people’s opinions on different matters. As a teacher you have to let your students know it’s a safe place to talk about day to day issues. In the reading “Teaching While Queer: One Teacher on Being Out in the Classroom '' by Kaitlin Smith, she states “The most important thing is that we respect that everybody's situation is different. As Facing History's slogan says, "people make choices and choices make history"...and some choices people have made in history have had really bad consequences, but we also can't judge the choices that people make to protect themselves.”.
